GOM Player is a free media player from the South Korean developer GOM & Company. It plays common video formats such as AVI, MP4, MKV, MOV, WMV and FLV along with subtitle formats including SMI, SRT and ASS, and it points users to external codecs when a file will not play. A large subtitle library, on-the-fly subtitle sync, and AI-generated subtitles built from speech recognition make it particularly popular with people who watch video with subtitles.
It suits viewers who want a player that can find and align subtitles for them, and those who prefer a fully localized interface. The free edition displays ads, however, and the current Windows version installs only on 64-bit Windows 10 or later, so anyone who wants an ad-free, lightweight player or still uses an older 32-bit PC should consider an alternative.
GOM Player handles video such as AVI, MKV, MP4, MOV, MPG, WMV, FLV, TS and VOB, and audio such as MP3, AAC, FLAC and OGG. The developer claims support for more than 100 formats and directs users to external codecs and a codec library when a file will not play.
A subtitle helper searches the built-in subtitle library for files matching the video being played. SMI, SRT, SUB (with IDX), VTT and ASS files are supported, and subtitle timing, position and size can be adjusted during playback.
Speech in a video can be recognized by AI and turned into subtitles, which can then be translated into other languages. This helps with lectures or foreign-language videos that come without subtitle files.
360-degree VR videos can be viewed by dragging the viewpoint with the mouse, including 360° VR videos streamed online. This mode requires DirectX 11 or later.
A chosen section can be looped, multiple sections can be repeated, and the playlist order can be rearranged. This is handy for language study or practice videos, and skins change the player's appearance.
Format playback, subtitle search and sync, AI subtitles, 360° VR and section repeat cover most viewing needs. Its subtitle tools in particular go further than those in most free players.
The Windows version offers 14 interface languages, and files start playing as soon as they are opened, so newcomers have little to learn. The preferences are extensive, however, and ads plus prompts for paid services make the interface feel busier than it needs to.
The free edition shows ads; an ad-free experience is reserved for the paid GOM Player Plus. Some AI features, such as AI upscaling, are tied to Plus licenses or credits, so it is worth checking which features the free edition actually includes.

The basic player is free. The free edition shows ads, and removing them requires the paid GOM Player Plus.
The official way is to switch to GOM Player Plus, which the developer sells as its ad-free edition with both lifetime and monthly subscription options.
The current version does not. Official requirements are 64-bit Windows 10 or later with at least 2 GB of RAM, and updates for Windows XP and Vista have ended.
Yes. Subtitle timing can be shifted forward or backward during playback, and subtitle position and size can be changed as well.
Yes. A separate version is available for macOS 10.13 High Sierra or later, with English, Korean and Japanese interfaces.
GOM Player remains a capable free video player for people who regularly watch with subtitles. Its subtitle library and AI subtitles are genuine strengths, but ads in the free edition, support narrowed to 64-bit Windows 10 or later, and features locked behind paid plans hold it to our editor rating of 3 out of 5.
