foobar2000 is a free audio player developed by Peter Pawlowski. It plays all mainstream audio formats out of the box and offers full support for gapless playback—continuous playback with no silence between tracks—and ReplayGain, which evens out loudness differences between songs and albums. Library management, tag editing, CD ripping and format conversion are all handled in the same program. Besides Windows, versions exist for macOS, Android and iOS.
It is well suited to listeners with large collections of lossless files such as FLAC, and to anyone who wants to keep tags and file names consistently organized. Users who enjoy tailoring an application can rebuild its layout to suit their workflow. The interface is English-only, though, and the default layout is a plain playlist view, so people who want a polished, localized player straight after installation may find it austere.
Mainstream formats including MP3, AAC, FLAC, Opus and WAV play without any setup. Additional decoder components extend support to less common formats.
Live albums and classical recordings play without breaks between tracks. Once ReplayGain values are scanned and written to tags, volume stays consistent across albums and individual songs.
The Properties dialog edits tags for many files at once, and MP3 files can carry ID3v1, ID3v2 or APEv2 tags as you choose. File operations can rename files or reorganize folders based on tag data.
Audio CDs can be ripped to files, and any supported format can be transcoded to another. Encoding to formats such as MP3 or AAC requires external encoders, which the official site bundles as a Free Encoder Pack.
In layout editing mode, panels such as the playlist, album art and library tree can be placed wherever you like. Keyboard shortcuts are fully customizable, so most actions can be done without the mouse.
Third-party components add new features and are installed from Preferences > Components. Beyond the built-in DSP effects, VST effects load on Windows, and the player can stream on a local network, control another foobar2000 instance and play internet radio.
Playback, library management, tagging, ripping and conversion cover nearly everything a music collector needs. Where something is missing, the component system usually fills the gap, which makes foobar2000 exceptionally extensible.
Dragging files into the window starts playback, so basic use is easy. Menus and settings are English-only—the official FAQ states that translations are not supported—and building a custom layout takes some time to learn.
There are no ads or bundled offers, and the official site states there is no telemetry or data collection. The developer warns that modified installers from other sites may be outdated or unsafe and asks users to download only from foobar2000.org; updates continued through 2026.
