Overview

ACDSee Free is a free image viewer and file browser from ACD Systems, the Canadian company behind the paid ACDSee Photo Studio line. Point it at a folder and it shows thumbnails straight away, opening common formats such as JPG, PNG, PSD and WEBP as well as camera RAW files including Canon CR3, Nikon NEF and Sony ARW. There is no catalog to build and no import step: photos are browsed exactly where they sit on the drive.

It is a good fit for photographers who shoot RAW and want to review images without launching an editor, and for anyone who finds the built-in Windows Photos app slow for sorting large folders. It is not an editor, though. The developer itself describes it as "only a file browser," the 64-bit installer is roughly 370 MB, and the official materials make no mention of a Korean interface. People who need retouching tools or a lightweight viewer will be better served elsewhere.

Key Features

RAW viewing

ACDSee Free opens RAW formats from the major camera makers, including CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW and DNG, without a separate conversion step. It also handles standard formats such as JPG, PNG, TIFF, GIF, PSD, WEBP and SVG.

Direct folder browsing

Drives and folders can be browsed immediately, with no library or catalog to populate first. The Sort menu orders thumbnails by image type, file size, date taken or date modified.

Quick View and search

Quick View lets you step through photos one at a time, and zoom tools help check fine detail. Quick Search helps locate a specific image without leaving the browsing view.

Batch rotate and flip

Several photos can be selected and rotated or flipped in one operation. This saves opening each portrait shot individually to straighten it.

Slideshows and printing

Selected images can be played as a slideshow or printed one at a time directly from the program. A favorite photo can also be set as the desktop wallpaper.

SendPix sharing

SendPix, a free media-sharing service built by ACD Systems, is integrated into the program for sending photos to family and friends.

Assessment

Features

RAW viewing, direct folder browsing, sorting, search and batch rotation cover the essentials of reviewing and culling photos. Adjustments such as cropping or exposure, and deeper photo management, are reserved for the paid Photo Studio products.

Ease of Use

Thumbnails appear as soon as a folder is selected, so viewing photos needs no setup. The interface is not available in Korean, which may slow down users who are not comfortable with English menus.

Stability & Safety

The official download page mentions no ads or bundled software, though it promotes a trial of the paid Photo Studio Ultimate. New versions have arrived roughly every six months, from 2.4 in December 2024 to 2.7.0.1530 in June 2026.

FAQ

Is ACDSee Free really free?

Yes, its viewing and browsing features are free to use. Editing and advanced photo management require a paid ACDSee Photo Studio product.

Can ACDSee Free open RAW files?

Yes. The official format list includes RAW formats from major camera makers, such as CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW and DNG.

Can you edit photos in ACDSee Free?

Only batch rotate and flip are included. ACD Systems presents ACDSee Free as a file browser and points users to Photo Studio for editing.

Does ACDSee Free work on Windows 11?

Yes. It is distributed as a 64-bit Windows installer, and Windows 11 is listed in the official system requirements.

What is the difference between ACDSee Free and ACDSee Photo Studio?

ACDSee Free only views, sorts and shares photos. Photo Studio adds photo editing and full file management, and is sold as a paid product with a free trial.

Verdict

ACDSee Free is a solid choice for Windows users who want to open, sort and cull photos, RAW files included, without paying for an editor. Direct folder browsing and broad RAW support stand out, but the lack of editing, the large download and the missing Korean interface hold it to our editor rating of 4 out of 5.
